UNUSED GRAFFITI ROOM
THEATRE CONVERSION
The client approached us to build a theatre room in the finished basement of the new home they recently purchased. The requirement was for a purpose-built theatre room with proper light conditions, theatre seating and excellent audio and visual performance.
THE CHALLENGE
The challenge being that the most applicable room for the new theatre was a graffiti room previously occupied by the teenager of the former owners. The room needed to be completely refinished, had a large closet, a window and tall, cavernous ceilings that needed sound treatment or the reverberations would have been distracting when sitting down to enjoy a movie.
THE SOLUTION
Integration Arts developed a plan to insulate and cover the window in order to keep the room completely light controlled. An important step in the purpose-build theatre room design. Lighting control was then added so the client could create the perfect lighting scenes for any movie, gaming, or sporting event they choose. All on lighting commands fully light the room to tidy up and LED step lighting provides safety in the dark when the room is in use.
Portion of the large closet was used to house the equipment rack that holds the theatre equipment and other home control equipment, and the remaining portion of the closet now houses a snack bar with controlled task and accent lighting.
We created a bulkhead around the perimeter of the room which helped make the room feel more intimate and allowed for a 2” thick acoustical star ceiling to be installed inside the ceiling tray. Not only does this give a dramatic twinkling star effect but the Kinetics noise control acoustic substrate curb the reverberation and help tune the room for excellent audio performance.
Integration Arts acted as the contractor and project manager for this project from start to finish. The client was able to use us as their single point of contact as we coordinated all other trades to complete the room on time and on budget.
THE RESULT
The result is a dramatic transformation from an unused graffiti room to the now-favorite room in the house. The new Integration Arts theatre room is used daily as a place for family and friends to gather and enjoy a comfortable and high-performing theatre experience!
